African summit on fertilizers and soil health
The Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya, will host the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit (AFSH) from May 7 to 9, 2024. Organized in response to the recommendation of the political organs of the African Union (AU), this major event is orchestrated by the AU's Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Environment (DARBE), in collaboration with AUDA-NEPAD, the RECs and other key partners.
The Summit aims to address the alarming decline in agricultural soil quality in Africa, a phenomenon that is negatively impacting the continent's agricultural productivity and food security. In 2006, the Abuja Declaration on Fertilizers for Africa's Green Revolution was adopted, focusing on increasing fertilizer use to boost agricultural productivity. Fifteen years later, the discourse has evolved, emphasizing the importance of sustainable soil management for efficient and sustainable agriculture.
Program and participants
The Summit will begin with opening statements by AU Heads of State and Government, as well as invited dignitaries. The opening session will be open to the media, offering a unique opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of fertilizers and soil health in Africa. Participants will include government representatives, private sector players, civil society organizations, academics and scientists, as well as representatives of donor organizations.
Objective and expected results
The main objective is to highlight the crucial role of fertilizers and soil health in sustainable agricultural growth in Africa. A 10-year action plan will be drawn up, with concrete recommendations for African leaders and stakeholders. This plan will focus on new policies and investments to rebuild soil health, thereby increasing fertilizer yields and profitability. Expected outcomes include the Nairobi Declaration, a 10-year Action Plan, the Soil Initiative for Africa (SIA), and a Financing Mechanism for the Action Plan.
The African Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit is a crucial milestone for African agriculture.
CORAF will take part in this event through a side-event organized with the CAADP-XP4 project implementation partners (AFAAS, ASARECA, CCARDESA and FARA) and IFAD under the theme "Strengthening agroecology commitments to ensure sustainable soil health in Africa". The consortium will also be present with an exhibition at stand n°5 during the summit.
