Conference "Strengthening cooperation in agri-food research and innovation for large-scale impact".

Event details

Agri-food systems must become more sustainable, healthy, productive, inclusive and climate-resilient to contribute effectively to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This requires profound changes, supported by research and innovation (R&I). The European research and innovation cooperation agenda is implemented through various dialogue forums with partner countries. It also forms part of the Global Gateway, which includes a pillar dedicated to "education and research". This agenda mobilizes various EU instruments and programs, such as the DeSIRA initiative and the Horizon Europe program.

This conference, organized by DG INTPA in collaboration with other EU Directorates General, specifically addresses the question of how R&I cooperation can contribute to a desirable transformation of agri-food systems. Discussions will focus on principles, partnerships, methods for large-scale innovation, capacities, funding and policies. The conference builds on the collective achievements and consolidated lessons of the DeSIRA initiative, while taking stock of other R&I programs implemented or supported by the EU.

The event aims to :

  • Share the results and lessons learned from R&I projects contributing to the transformation of food systems.
  • Identify the levers and obstacles to large-scale innovation to encourage productive, inclusive and sustainable investment in agri-food systems.
  • Explore the future role of R&I in the transformation of agri-food systems, the strengthening of innovation ecosystems and the elaboration of policies adapted to development priorities (MDGs, post-Malabo, Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation in Africa, and the EU's Global Gateway strategy).
  • Provide policy-makers with recommendations to improve the complementarity and synergy of EU mechanisms, in particular by supporting the EU-Africa R&I Partnership on FNSSA (Sustainable Food, Nutrition and Agricultural Security).

This conference, in which CORAF is taking part, is an opportunity to connect with players from the world of politics, research, the private sector and NGOs, who will share objectives or experiences in promoting research and innovation in agri-food systems through international cooperation.
