Introducing CORAF and the Program
The West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF) was founded in 1987. CORAF (www.coraf.org) currently brings together the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) of 23 West and Central African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tomé et Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. CORAF's vision mentioned in its Strategic Plan 2018-2027 is a future where the people and communities of West and Central Africa achieve food and nutrition security and prosperity. Its mission is to achieve a sustainable improvement in agricultural productivity, competitiveness and markets in West and Central Africa. To achieve the goals of socio-economic development and human well-being, African agriculture must significantly improve its productivity, while maintaining the sustainability of diversified, high-quality agri-food systems. This is the context in which the RADiUS agroecology network is being set up, where real opportunities exist but need to be better known, better organized, enhanced and channeled to achieve the goal of the broadest possible agroecological transition in WCAs. In synergy with existing organizations, RMRN RADiUS will create appropriate frameworks for interaction between all the players concerned, focusing on activities to share experience, build capacity, disseminate knowledge and validated agroecological innovations, and provide support and decision-making aids for political decision-makers in the WCA area. The overall aim of the RADiUS project is to support the agroecological transition of WCA farms by promoting principles, assessment tools, knowledge and innovative solutions to ensure the sustainable economic, food and nutritional security and sovereignty of populations. The specific aim is to use CORAF's MITA platform, which centralizes the dissemination of agricultural technologies and innovations at regional level in WCA, thus facilitating access to information for optimal knowledge management, identification of gaps and valorization of data for the benefit of the community. The project aims to build the agroecological capacities of stakeholders by supporting continuing education and academic training services, developing community entrepreneurship and promoting a legal and institutional framework conducive to the development and adoption of agroecology in WCAs, by deploying standard monitoring and evaluation tools, and by lobbying political bodies at various levels.
