TARSPro: A benchmark study supports CORAF's vision

The scaling-up of Agricultural Technologies and Innovations for Increasing the Resilience of Production Systems and Family Farms in West and Central Africa (TARSPro) project aims to ensure food, nutritional and economic security for the populations of West and Central Africa. As part of the implementation of TARSPro, a baseline study was carried out to provide a performance assessment tool.

"This baseline study is essential for monitoring the implementation of TARSPro. Our approach is to identify the key indicators that will enable us to evaluate the results at the end of the project", explained Dr Nicole Nkoum, TARSPro project coordinator at CORAF.

With financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), CORAF intends to use TARSPro to achieve three specific objectives:

  • increase the resilience of the food production system of at least 2 million producers/processors, 50% of whom are women and 60% young people in the 5 target countries, and more than 10 million indirect beneficiaries.
  • sustainably meet the demand for know-how (technologies and innovations) of at least 40% of the family farms affected by the project's intervention
  • ensure a coalition and synergy of action between players involved in agricultural transformation.

On the basis of these aspirations and taking into account the project indicators, the team of consultants recruited for the baseline study carried out the research. Beforehand, in each country targeted by TARSPro, interviewers were trained in the use of data collection tools to achieve the objectives of the baseline study.

At the end of the first presentation of the study results on December 13, 2022, Dr Nicole Nkoum thanked all the teams who had contributed to the study. "We can clearly see the reference situation in the targeted sectors in each country. The results of this study have confirmed the need to implement the TARSPro project," concluded the project coordinator. TARSPro is a project supported by the Swiss Cooperation and implemented in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad.
