Since October 2019, CORAF has been implementing the Strengthening networks and institutional capacities in plant improvement for the development of resilient crops meeting the needs of West African farmers (ABEE) project in Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal.

Despite a number of challenges - including the COVID-19 pandemic - which somewhat hampered the smooth running of the project, it nevertheless achieved notable results over the period 2020 - 2022.

"From 2020 to 2022, the implementing partners were able to adapt to the challenges and carry out activities planned as part of the project, leading to tangible results. In this case, we have several Master's and PhD students who have been recruited and are continuing their research work thanks to the project, some of whom have already defended their dissertations, and several hundred participatory tests that have been conducted with the active involvement of producers," emphasized Dr. Ousmane NDOYE, ABEE Project Coordinator at CORAF.

Theinfographic below gives an overview of the project's performance over the period in question.

As part of the project management, CORAF and the country implementation partners hold an annual meeting. The 2022 iteration was held from November 21 to 23, 2022 in Dakar, Senegal.

ABEE aims to implement a more coordinated approach to varietal selection, to improve and modernize breeding practices on the one hand, and on the other, to identify market demands in the implementing countries (Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal).

It is funded by the European Union for a period of five (05) years under the Development of Intelligent Innovation through Research in Agriculture (DeSIRA) initiative, to the tune of €8M.
