CORAF's Executive Director, Dr Abdou TENKOUANO, recently met the Head of the Scientific Research and Innovation Division of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr Ronald KOUAKOU, in Abuja, Nigeria.
The meeting took place on October 28, 2022, a week after the first-ever African Forum for Research and Innovation (FARI), organized by the ECOWAS Commission from October 17 to 21, 2022 in the Nigerian capital.
The central topic of discussion between the two personalities was the organization of the next FARI.
FARI is the ECOWAS Forum. It was created by the Conference of Heads of State and Government at its 60th Ordinary Session, held on December 12, 2021 in Abuja, Nigeria.
According to ECOWAS, its aim is to improve public understanding of the role of Science, Technology and Innovation in socio-economic development. It provides a framework for regional exchange between all stakeholders (researchers, innovators, decision-makers, private sector, technical and financial partners, etc.).
"FARI is a commendable initiative that will stimulate science to play its role as a catalyst for development. In relation to agricultural research and development, it will promote research that is better adapted to current agricultural challenges and to the adoption of proven technologies and innovations, thus contributing to the achievement of food and nutritional security in the sub-region", declared Dr Abdou TENKOUANO, Executive Director of CORAF.
"The active involvement of CORAF in FARI is necessary, given its role as a major player in the coordination of agricultural research in the sub-region, and given that it is the technical arm of ECOWAS responsible for assisting it in the implementation of its regional agricultural policy", he said.
The first edition of FARI was held under the central theme of "Science, Technology and Innovation for a competitive ECOWAS".
