Innovation platforms prove their worth when interests converge

The main aim of innovation platforms is to facilitate the transfer of technology and knowledge between players in a specific value chain.
Several innovations and technologies were produced in Niger and brought directly to market before the start of the West African Agricultural Productivity Program (WAAPP).
There was often little or no interaction between value chain players. The challenges, potentialities and opportunities of a specific technology or innovation were barely discussed between players before it reached the market. This stage is critical, as it enables all the members of a value chain to fully understand the value of a specific product and take advantage of it.

The innovation platform is a new forum for players to discuss the various links in the value chain (production, preservation, packaging and marketing) of a product. Thanks to the intervention of PPAAO Niger, actors in the production and marketing chain of several products, including milk, kilichi (dried meat), vegetable seeds, onions, etc., have been able to organize themselves and set up a new platform. For example, small-scale farmers involved in milk production, collection and transport, who previously had virtually no links, have created milk platforms in almost every region of Niger.Souley Hamidou, Monitoring/Evaluation Specialist, PPAAO Niger
Bankable action plans
Impressive results
As part of PPAAO Niger's 2016 annual work program, around 30 activities resulting from the action plans developed through the innovation platforms were funded to the tune of 200 million CFA francs. Around 25 young bakers were trained to set up their own businesses. Kilichi sales outlets have been set up. Milk collection centers and fish ponds have been set up.
On these platforms, players saw that they could give up their individual ambitions, since they saw a great advantage in working in collaboration and synergy with other players with similar interests. Together, they used the space not only as a platform to negotiate, but also to build partnerships and involve actors willing to work together. Thanks to these platforms, the women of Togone village have become even closer, and are cooperating more closely in the area of finance. Every week, some twenty women collect and donate around 70,000 FCFA to a designated member.
Delegations from other countries visited the platforms to learn how to preserve kilichi. As part of knowledge sharing and learning, PPAAO agents from Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal collaborated with their colleagues in Niger, acquiring essential knowledge for kilichi production. This has enabled these countries to improve their approach to meat drying.
In general, 18 platforms have been created and strengthened in the fields of milk, rice, kilichi, composite bread, onions, poultry and fish farming, seeds and product processing.
Some 2,400 members have benefited from these platforms in terms of capacity building and equipment.
Chacune de ces plateformes dispose d’une convention et d’un plan d’actions clairs qui déterminent les fonds qu’elle reçoit du PPAAO Niger.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1533137440290{background-image: url(http://coraf.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/souley_ham1.jpg?id=18415) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;border-radius: 5px !important;}”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner equal_height=”yes” css=”.vc_custom_1530791742611{padding-bottom: 70px !important;}”][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text el_class=”kjj” css=”.vc_custom_1533136998995{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;padding-left: 30px !important;background-color: #f6f6f6 !important;border-radius: 1px !important;}”]
Lessons learned
By joining forces, the members of these platforms have become convinced that their aspirations are better taken into account when they act collectively.
