Published on: 07/13/2020

The 28th session of the CORAF Governing Board (GB) takes place from July 14 to 16, 2020. It will be chaired by Dr. Maria Angela P. Bareto Da Veiga Moreno, Chair of the GC. For three days, Board members will deliberate and take key decisions to improve CORAF's institutional governance and strengthen the performance of the Executive Secretariat.

In line with the travel restrictions put in place by most governments to contain the spread of COVID-19, this 28th session of the Board of Directors will be held by videoconference.

CORAF's governance system comprises a General Assembly (supreme authority and highest decision-making body), a Board of Directors, an Executive Secretariat and a Scientific and Technical Committee.

The General Assembly meets once every three years, most recently in April 2018 in Dakar, Senegal, and approved a new strategic direction for CORAF to transform the agricultural economy in a sustainable way. CORAF's Board of Directors is mandated by the General Assembly to monitor and implement its decisions. As such, the Board oversees the activities of the Executive Secretariat, and consequently reviews, approves and controls the annual program and budget.

With regard to governance issues, the Board plans to examine, among other things, the state of implementation of the Board's 2019-2021 action plan, preparations for the 13th ordinary session of the 2021 General Assembly, and the Executive Secretariat's performance in implementing the program and budget.

CORAF is scheduled to hold two Board sessions each year. The current Chair, Dr. Maria Angela P. Bareto Da Veiga Moreno is a Cape Verdean national who also heads the National Research Institute for Agricultural Development (INIDA). She is an expert in biosystems and rural engineering and has chaired the Board since April 2018.

CORAF's Governing Board is made up of a diverse group of stakeholders representing its broad constituency. Members include representatives of national research systems, international research organizations, donors, civil society organizations and farmers' groups.
