TARSPro: Accelerating agricultural innovations in Burkina-Faso
Published on: 08/03/2024
CORAF's 'Technologies et Innovations Agricoles pour l'Accroissement de la Résilience des Systèmes de Production et des Exploitations Familiales en Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre (TARSPro)' project is in its active phase, already bringing significant results to the African agricultural landscape. As a reminder, this project aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices and strengthen the resilience of family farms. In Burkina Faso, it is implemented by the Institut de l'Environnement et de Recherches Agricoles (INERA), through the Centre Régional d'Excellence sur les Fruits et Légumes (CRE-FL).
Some key results for 2023
The year 2023 was marked by a series of tangible achievements for TARSPro in Burkina-Faso, including the successful implementation of a climate-smart village in Ouda. This pilot village was chosen after extensive consultations with local stakeholders. It represents a crucial testing ground for new agricultural technologies enabling better management of the adverse effects of climate change on farming activities.
The ongoing operation of the Farako-Bâ technology park also bears witness to the progress made in disseminating innovations. The park has become a "supermarket" where players in the targeted agricultural value chains can discover and experiment with the latest advances in promising technologies for their activities.
Within this park, the TarsPro project has also specifically targeted seven (07) gender- and nutrition-sensitive technologies, demonstrating its attention to specific groups and its commitment to the food security of farming communities and the well-being of their families.
Training and capacity-building were also at the heart of the project's activities in 2023 in Burkina-Faso. From training producers in crop residue recovery to training stakeholders in post-harvest loss management practices, TARSPro invests in skills development to ensure the successful adoption of new technologies.
Tangible impact
Since the start of the project, 14,984 people have been reached by project activities in Burkina-Faso, 27.03% of them women and 47% young people aged over 35. This social inclusion is crucial to ensure that the benefits of agricultural innovation are widely felt in the communities participating in the project. Despite the challenges encountered, the project has managed to maintain a steady pace of implementation and is well on the way to achieving its long-term objectives.
TARSPro has positioned itself as a major catalyst for the development of the agricultural sector in West and Central Africa. With its impressive achievements and commitment to sustainable development, it is paving the way for smarter, more resilient and more inclusive agriculture for future generations. The TARSPro project covers 5 countries in West and Central Africa, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad.
