Dakar, Apr 10 (APS) - The West African Agricultural Productivity Program (WAPP) has, since its implementation in 2008, reached "directly or indirectly" nearly 49 million people, said Dr Abdou Tenkouano, Director of the Executive Council of the West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF), in Dakar on Tuesday.
"To date, 49 million people have benefited indirectly and 9 million, directly from the WAPP (...), the World Bank's second most successful project set up in 2016″, he said on the occasion of CORAF's twelfth assembly.
According to Dr. Abdou Tenkouano, "the PPAAO, financed by the World Bank, has, from 2008 to date, facilitated the production and dissemination of over 400 technologies".
And the project has, in collaboration with many African agricultural researchers nearing retirement, "been able to train over 1,000 young researchers to enable them to continue advancing the agricultural research agenda in their countries," he added.
In the same vein, said Dr Tenkouano, "one of CORAF's major successes in recent years has been to get researchers from English-, French- and Portuguese-speaking countries to work together to solve common regional challenges".
"Overall, during its 30 years of existence, CORAF has provided considerable leadership and facilitation support to develop common research objectives in West and Central Africa," he praised.
